Pacifica Peace People: some history and concerns
Pacifica Peace People (PPP) was
formed in early June of 2003. Some of us were among the 150 who participated
in the worldwide candlelight vigil on March 16, 2003. On March 22, several
of us began standing every Saturday at Manor and Palmetto, joining with
the international “Women in Black” in silent witness against
war Many of us signed the anti-war ad of April 09, 2003 in the Pacifica
Tribune.
Why Pacifica Peace People?
We believe
in actively working together for a peaceful world because a peaceful
world requires worldwide cooperation.
We believe
in acting locally for peace globally
We believe
that the prolonged war and occupation in Iraq is causing mounting human,
fiscal and environmental consequences
We believe
that our credibility among the world’s people continues to deteriorate
Those who share our concerns about war, peace and the common good
are encouraged to join us. We welcome an honest exchange
of ideas with those who share our apprehensions about our new and disturbing
national direction.
Pacifica Peace People
Some concerns we are addressing:
The policy of preemptive war, unilateral military activity and prolonged
occupation
The
rapidly expanding military budget which is draining resources from
domestic needs Provision of the Patriot Act, which threaten the
Bill of Rights and our civil liberties
Detention
of citizens and non-citizens without their being charged with a
crime and denial of legal counsel
Rights
to collective bargaining diminishing: the loss of right of representation
of workers in the Dept of Homeland Security
Our
local Congressional representatives’ pro war votes
The
tendency of public education to promote conformity rather than a
respect for a diversity of opinion
